Abstract Driven by x-ray user demands such as single-molecule imaging and nonlinear x-ray sciences, improving the x-ray free-electron laser brightness and peak power is highly desired but also challenging. For linac-driven FELs, the wake fields in the linac structure lead to a "double-horn" shape of the current profile, which makes CSR effects more pronounced and also increases the FEL bandwidth and divergence. We report recent experimental studies of truncating the double horns with collimators located inside a bunch compressor. Peak power of over 100GW at 9keV has been recently measured with a collimated beam.
