Abstract |
In conventional X-ray spectroscopy, the emission signal is emitted into the full 4pi solid angle, but only a fraction of it can be detected with state-of-the-art X-ray analyzer optics for both hard and soft X-rays. A fundamentally new approach of stimulated and non-linear X-ray spectroscopy, in which all emitted photons are directed into the forward direction is discussed. This approach has the potential to not only overcome the limitations of 4pi signal collection, in some cases it can also lead to several orders of magnitude larger signal yields and/or information not obtainable with conventional methods. We will focus on the feasibility of this method for various X-ray pulse and sample parameters, and its impact on chemical sensitivity. Finally, we will describe how expanding this and similar methods to controlling the time and frequency observation window, the technique may also yield information of excited states beyond what is available by conventional X-ray spectroscopy. |
