Abstract |
Utilizing ultrashort soft X-ray pulses from the LCLS we carried out a pump-probe resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) experiment on Fe(CO)5 photodissociation in ethanol. This allowed us to follow the evolution of the valence orbital structure of iron carbonyl molecules with 300 fs (FWHM) time resolution within the first 3.5 ps. Supported by ab initio electronic structure calculations we identified relevant reaction steps – sub-picosecond excited state relaxation involving change in spin state and interaction with the solvent. |
