Abstract

Energy dissipation in microprocessors remains a key challenge for miniaturization. To better understand this energy dissipation it is important to understand non-equilibrium energy flow between the electrons and the lattice. The energy transfer from the electrons to the lattice is characterized in gold thin films using pump probe diffuse scattering measurements carried out at the Ultrafast Electron Diffraction beamline.

Despite the Debye-Waller effect having leveled off around 10ps continued thermalization is observed in gold between 10 and 50ps. These studies on gold serve as a stepping stone towards more complex materials where energy transfer between electrons, spins and the lattice must be taken into account.
