Abstract Spin-transfer-torque excitations in ferromagnetic nanostructures: spin waves and spin torque oscillators,  Spin-wave excitations in ferromagnetic thin films might complement digital semiconductor technologies and offer new possibilities for increased memory capacity and computation performance. Promising applications based on the spin-transfer effect are spin-torque nano-oscillators (STNOs) where spin-transfer-torque is used to drive a GHz oscillation of the magnetization direction of the magnetic film. These gigahertz (1-100 GHz) oscillators (STNOs) synchronize to background signals and to one another under certain conditions, which allows multiple applications based on aggregated STNOs. One question here is how fast does this synchronization happen? In this talk we will overview the spin-transfer-torque magnetic excitations in ferromagnetic thin films and focus on the spin waves created by STNOs. We will review some applications of spin-wave patterns created from STNOs and their interactions with background oscillations. Also we will discuss how to effectively study the physics at the picosecond and nanometer scale of these spin-wave excitations in ferromagnetic thin films.
