Abstract We will briefly review methods of generating short X-ray pulses in storage rings. A method of generating long and short bunches in storage rings with super-conducting harmonic rf cavities will be discussed. This method could simultaneously accommodate regular users and timing experiment users at all beamlines. If it is combined with low-alpha mode, it could provide short pulse lengths down to the few hundred femtosecond regime. Challenges of implementing this method will also be discussed.
