Abstract

This talk will describe Polarization-dependent Imaging Contrast (PIC)-mapping, an imaging modality introduced by Gilbert and her group (1,2), which uses PEEM spectromicroscopy and x-ray linear dichroism (3). PIC-mapping is uniquely useful to map the orientations CaCO3 nanocrystals and the patterns they form in various biominerals, including aragonite nacre from mollusk shells (4,5), calcite teeth from sea urchins (6-8), and vaterite spicules from ascidians (9). The nanocrystal orientation patterns reveal the formation mechanisms of these magnificent biominerals.
